Junior Matches

u14s Widmer End v Hazlemere - saturday 27th Feb

Another hard fought match represented by Zubyr Khan and Daniel Mason.

Zubyr played their No2 first and in double quick time took the match 4-0, 4-0 playing aggresive tennis and untroubled thoughout the match, also serving brilliantly.

Dan played their No1 first and narrowly lost the first set before staging a powerful comeback to win the second from 2-0 down taking it 4-2, then all down to the 10 point tie break, which went Hazlemere's way 10 - 6.

Dan went on the dominate the match against their No2 4-1, 4-0 with some steady tennis.

Zubyr unfortunately couldn't match his first match performance and narrowly lost 5-3, 4-2 but we know he'll come back stronger next time.

Overall it was great to see how these kids work out their match strategy and play shots that show they will always be good players, with proper serves, groundstrokes and volleys.

Well done guys, 27 games to 19 games in favour of Widmer End

u18s Widmer End 0 v GXLTC 4

The under 18s represented by Nathan Twitchett and Tom Waksman played a pair from GX Bull lane. This being probably their first serious singles play and had a very hard set of matches against 2 very consistant and match prepared players. The matches were hard fought, but sadly we came second!

The signs are promising as the points were well contested with Nathan launching missiles (100 mph) only to have them returned, but some fantastic rallies. Tom (mr consistant) was involved in some of the longest rallies ever seen at the club.

Both players fought for the cause and were well congratulated by their opponents who know they were in a good game.

u14s Widmer End 3 v Burnham 1

Widmer end was represented by Zubyr and Owais Khan.

Widmer End’s junior tennis team showed great fighting spirit, as they came back from the brink to edge out the travelling boys of Burnham by 3 matches to1.

Widmer End’s team, which consisted of 13 year old Zubayr Khan, and his 10 year old brother Owayss Khan produced some stunning attacking tennis, as they came back from a match down to beat a Burnham pairing of 13 year old Oscar, and 12 year old Matthew.

Widmer End started slowly, and Owayss lost his first match to an in-form Oscar. However Zubayr levelled proceedings in a scrappy second match, despite being slightly off-form.

After Owayss put in an excellent performance to breeze through his second match, Zubayr was left the task of finishing off Widmer End’s victory. He started very sluggishly, and after losing the first set 4-0, he was soon down match point at 2-3 in the second.

However he saved the match point and then fought back in breathtaking fashion, finally winning 12-10 in a dramatic, nerve-jangling championship tie-break.

This superb comeback completed a fine victory for Widmer End.

Report by Zubyr Khan

A full match report top come (as it was a long hard battle), untill then...

.. From my telephone reporter (Ashfaq), some absolutely amazing tennis with Zubyr coming back from a set and having to break to stay in the match eventually winning in a 12-10 tie-break.

These 2 matches played to 4 games (not 6) lasted about 2.5 hours

Well done!

Paul
